A (Very) Brief History
Dog sledding is a sport and practice that is estimated to have existed for over 4000 years, and one that is firmly rooted in Canadian history thanks to the pivotal role sled dogs played during the fur trade and their service to the Inuit peoples of Canada. As the name suggests, dog sledding involves dashing across the snow by sled, pulled by a team of majestic and well-trained dogs that love to run! At top speeds, dogs can reach upwards of 32km/hr (20 mph) and cover up to 130 km (8-miles) per day, all while braving the cold and having fun.
