Walk on Ice
Grotto Canyon Icewalk
Adventure Details
Experience the Grotto Canyon Icewalk, a must-do Banff winter activity! Walk on a frozen creek bed, explore dramatic ice formations and unusual rock structures, discover ancient Native rock art, and learn the geology and history of the mountains on this guided, family-friendly ice walk tour.
A short drive from Banff, inside the Grotto Canyon, we actually walk on the frozen creek bed through a narrow canyon to a weeping ice waterfall. For many, the highlight of the Grotto Canyon Icewalk is the ancient native pictographs, that are easily missed by the general public. The symbols have many possible meanings and origins and you will learn more about First Nation history in the Bow Valley. You might even spot ice climbers scaling the frozen waterfalls in the canyon. Guests should dress in ski wear for this trip, including hats, mitts and warm boots.
