Banff by Horseback: The Perfect Fall Adventure
If you’ve read our previous post on staying safe while horseback riding, you’re well on your way to being a pro in the saddle. What you might not know, however, is that our horseback trips continue into the fall months, giving you and your family a unique view of the Rockies as they explode with autumn colours.
With lots going on around Banff throughout as we transition into the cooler months, the mountains are happy to welcome visitors looking for a little late season adventure. Building on our last piece, here are a few more tips to make sure your equine expenditure is safe and enjoyable for the whole family.
Dress warm
Just like our last piece states, you’ll want to make sure you dress to the occasion. Wearing boots or shoes with a slight heel will help you stay warm and maintain a solid grip in the stirrups. It’s also advisable to dress in layers so you can shed heavier items if you find yourself overheating.
Bring a rain poncho/jacket
One of the realities of autumn in the mountains is that the weather can sometimes shift unpredictably. Rain can sneak up on even the nicest of fall days, so it’s always best to bring something to protect yourself from the elements should the weather change.
Stay alert
It can be easy to be distracted by all the wonderful sights and sounds of nature, one of the biggest things that can keep you safe on the trail is by ensuring both you and the rest of your party listen closely to your guide. That way, if there’s a sudden change in plans (after all, never say never in nature!), you’ll know exactly what to do.

We’d hate to make it sound like horseback riding is all about chores and rules, so the number one thing to remember is…enjoy yourself! Plug into the gorgeous landscape around you, and allow yourself to relax as your leader steers you through some of the most famous areas of the Canadian Wilderness.
