Are you heading to Banff? Whether you’re an Alberta local visiting for your annual Rocky Mountain escape or arriving from farther away to discover the magic of this world-renowned destination, Banff National Park has something for everyone to explore and enjoy. Full of soaring peaks, lush green forests and turquoise waters that are sure to captivate and awe, one of the crown jewels of the region is Moraine Lake.
As one of the most iconic spots in the Canadian Rockies, Moraine Lake is famous for its beautiful scenery (once immortalized on the $20 bill!) and is a must-visit location for those who love the wonder of the great outdoors.
If you’re looking to make the most of your time in the Rockies, Banff Adventures is here to hook you up with some of the best activities you’ll find in Banff National Park, including the perfect guided opportunity for early risers to snap photos of Moraine Lake before crowds pick up for the day.
Why Visit Moraine Lake?
Moraine Lake is often called one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and once you visit, it’s easy to see why. The glassy surface of the glacier-fed lakes shimmers in rain or shine, reflecting the majestic peaks that soar all around its perimeter for a truly breathtaking view. Those who love the beauty of nature and the quiet that comes with the great outdoors will revel in the tranquillity that’s waiting to be found on the shore of the lake.
Whether you’re looking to practice your photography skills or memorize every last detail of your trip in your mind's eye, you’ll never forget the sheer beauty waking to be found at Moraine!
Getting to Moraine Lake
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or it’s been a while since your last trip, it’s crucial to be aware that rules regarding access to Moraine Lake have changed. As of summer 2023, PERSONAL VEHICLES CAN NO LONGER ACCESS MORAINE LAKE ROAD. This means that in order to get to the lake, you will require transportation with a licensed shuttle service or Roam Public Transit. For those hoping to visit Lake Louise as well (located approximately 40 minutes away), it’s important to know that you can pay to park at the lakeshore; however, it can be quite busy in the summer, and it can be extremely difficult to find a spot during peak periods.
Looking for shuttle passes? We offer them here.
What to Do At Moraine Lake
There are plenty of ways to enjoy Moraine Lake, both guided and unguided. During the summer months, you can rent a canoe and paddle on the iconic waters, enjoy one of the many hiking trails in the area, and, of course, snap photos.
For those looking for a guided experience that also offers the convenience of built-in transportation, our Early Bird Explorer package checks both boxes and gives you unparalleled access to natural wonder. Depart Banff at 4 am (it’s called the early bird for a reason!) and make the trek to Moraine Lake shuttle with your small group of fellow explorers, then explore both Lake Moraine and Lake Louise to your heart's content! Snap photos, explore the lake shore and make memories you’re sure to treasure forever.
