Accessing Lake Louise and Moraine Lake: What You Need to Know
If you haven’t visited the area in a few years, or if you’re a first time visitor, you may not be aware that there have been some recent changes regarding accessibility for private motor vehicles. It is crucial to be aware of the new requirements, especially for those hoping to visit Moraine Lake during its short open season which runs from June through to early October. New access requirements are as follows:
Moraine Lake
As of 2023, private motor vehicles are no longer able to access Moraine Lake due to concerns about overcrowding and lack of available parking. To access the lake, you must use an approved shuttle service or commercial provider. While you can hike or bike in, it’s important to be aware that Moraine Lake is considered a backcountry area, which means there is no cell phone service, Wifi, running water, or other services along the way. Hiking from Lake Louise to Moraine Lake (the most common starting point since Lake Louise is approximately 40 minutes away from Banff by vehicle) is also a 14.4 trip one way, making it difficult to accomplish in a single day unless you are highly experienced. For most, the best (and safest way) to access the lake will be by shuttle.
Lake Louise
Lake Louise is open all year round and is open to private vehicles. However, it has extremely limited parking available. This makes it difficult to find a spot, and those who do will need to pay once they arrive. Because of the high demand all year round, securing a parking spot can be highly unreliable, and therefore, Parks Canada recommends parking at the Lake Louise Park and Ride and taking the free shuttle service into the region (note: this shuttle does not access Moraine Lake).
