Fun Facts about the Banff Gondola
The Gondola is over 60 years old!
The Banff Gondola opened in 1959 and has been ferrying visitors to the top of Sulphur Mountain ever since. Located just 4km (2.5 miles) from the centre of Banff, the Gondola offers an 8-minute ride to the top of the mountain and has been meticulously maintained and renovated to ensure guest comfort and safety with every ride. The gondola is wheelchair friendly, features a world-class interpretive centre at the summit, and is located close to the Banff Upper Hot Springs for those looking to enjoy a relaxing soak after treating yourself to jaw-dropping views.
The Banff Gondola is powered by electricity
You may not know this, but diesel engines operate many other world-famous gondolas and sightseeing lifts. While this method may be effective, it’s not as environmentally friendly as utilizing electricity to operate. The Banff Gondola is powered by electricity, protecting the surrounding environment and helping keep both the air and atmosphere safe and clean for the many critters (and humans) that call Banff home.
The Banff Gondola has a glass-floored viewing platform (and plenty of other panoramic views)
If you’re looking for some of the best panoramas in Banff, the gondola is one of the best ways to ensure you see as much as possible. Each gondola car is outfitted with a (thoroughly secure) glass floor that allows you to watch your ascent from every angle, and once you reach the top of the facility, you’ll be treated to 360° views both inside the centre as well as on the outdoor boardwalk (be sure to bundle, winds can be heavy during the winter and the temperatures can be quite chilly).
The Sky Bistro
Looking for an unforgettable dinner date, lunch, or way to celebrate a special occasion? The Sky Bistro is tucked away atop Sulphur Mountain and offers guests delectable meals that are sure to wow your tastebuds while your senses get the full-immersive experience with jaw-dropping views around every corner. Whether you’re looking to celebrate a big day or simply dine in luxury, the Sky Bistro has you covered!\
Perfect for hikers
If you want a more “boots-on-the-ground” adventure, hardcore explorers can hike to the top of Sulphur Mountain on foot, enjoy the facilities (and warm up) and enjoy a more leisurely ride down by gondola. The trek up the mountain is approximately 5.5km long, and those wishing to attempt to summit during the winter months will need to dress appropriately and use extra gear like microspikes/crampons and poles to help navigate slippery, icy, and trickier sections of the hike.
