Known all over the world for our famous ski hills, gorgeous soaring peaks, and endless ways to stay and play all season long, Banff National Park and the surrounding areas of Golden BC (approximately 90 minutes away) are must-visit destinations for those looking to kick things up a notch this winter and get their fill of thrills in the mountains.
At Banff Adventures, there’s nothing we love more than helping visitors plan their perfect Rocky Mountain escape. For those looking to get their adrenaline pumping this winter, we have no shortage of exciting opportunities to explore, from snowmobiling to heli-skiing, dogsledding and more.
Below, we’ll highlight just a few of the epic adventures you can embark on when visiting Banff in winter. Read on to learn more!
The Ultimate Snowmobiling Experience
Snowmobiling is a favourite winter activity for many Canadians, and whether you’re an Alberta local or visiting from further away, there’s nothing quite like experiencing the Rockies from the driver’s seat of a powerful powder-crushing machine! While snowmobiling (or the use of any motorized vehicles) isn’t allowed within Banff National Park itself to protect the landscape and wildlife, Golden BC is just 90 minutes away and is home to endless stretches of fresh powder that’s perfect for an exhilarating ride. Zoom across frozen lakes and trails and take in the beauty of the rugged mountains like never before on our tours designed for riders of various skill levels.
Note: To operate a snowmobile, the minimum age is 16 years old, and all drivers must have the equivalent of a CDN Class 5 driver’s license. Passengers must be at least 5 years old to ride.
Dogsledding: A Unique Winter Adventure
If there’s one bucket-list adventure you have to try this winter, it’s dogsledding! As a time-honoured Canadian tradition, dogsledding offers a thrilling way to explore the Rockies and an unforgettable experience that you’re sure to enjoy.
Zoom across the frozen tundra pulled by the raw power of eager huskies and feel the wind in your hair as you zip through fresh powder to experience the Canadian wilderness like never before. As our most popular tour each winter, dogsled trips take place in Canmore and Lake Louise and are featured in our Husky Express adventure package to help you make your most of your epic trip to the mountains!
Heli-Skiing: The Ultimate Adrenaline Rush
Banff is a Mecca for ski and snowboard enthusiasts from all over the world, and while famous resorts like Sunshine, Mt. Norquay, and Lake Louise provide you with ample opportunity to hit the slopes, those looking for the ultimate day on the “hill” should consider heli-skiing! Combine a thrilling helicopter ride with fresh, untouched powder and terrain that’s matched to your group’s skill level* for 3-5 runs of pure, unfiltered adventure. Be the first to carve down pristine paths, nd leave your mark on the alpine snow without having to worry about anyone else getting in your way!
Heli-skiing offers the ultimate combination of adventure, adrenaline, and awe-inspiring view, all for an experience you’ll never forget.
Soar Above the Rockies with the Banff Gondola
Looking for a more relaxed adventure, or a great way to unwind after an epic day of thrills in the Rockies? The Banff Gondola is another must-experience activity that’s easy for adventurers of all ages and activity levels to enjoy! Soar to new heights (over 7000 ft above sea level) and take in unparalleled views of the winter wonderland that covers Banff all season long from the summit of Sulphur Mountain. After a jaw-dropping ascent from the comfort of your gondola, you can explore scenic boardwalks, enjoy a hot meal at the Sky Bistro, and take in the educational exhibits that tell the story of Banff National Park and the many creatures and natural wonders that call it home.
The Banff Godola is a visitor favourite all year round and is included in several of our packages, including Husky Express, Sleigh Soak and Soar, and our Winter Activity Pass. View our full list of winter packages here!
