Sleigh Ride 101: How to Prepare

Are you and the family getting ready for your next Rocky Mountain getaway and wondering how you’ll make the most of your time in Canada’s biggest backyard?
As the perfect place to visit all-year-round, winter brings an extra special hint of magic to Banff National Park, coating our trees and soaring peaks with a glistening layer of fresh snow that’s breathtaking to behold. Whether you’re making a day trip in from Calgary, or travelling a little further from Edmonton for the weekend, there are plenty of ways for adventurers of all ages and experience levels to take in this incredible part of the Canadian Wilderness.
For over 20 years, Banff Adventures has welcomed visitors to our beautiful backyard, helping them make memories that are sure to last for a lifetime. In the colder months, one of our most requested activities is our sleigh rides. Below, we’ll cover a few top tips to help you enjoy this wonderful family activity and stay comfortable while you dash across the snow. Read on to learn more!
Dress warm
It’s no secret: Canadian winters can be chilly, and the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable no matter the season. While our private sleigh rides offer couples the extra warmth of a buffalo blanket, the key to a comfy ride for everyone is to bundle up and prepare for the elements. Make sure you have a warm toque, mitts or gloves thick enough to block wind chill, a scarf, an appropriately padded jacket, and boots to keep your toes toasty!
Hold On
While our rides are gentle enough for everyone in the family, safety is a shared responsibility between you and our tour guides. Please help keep you and your little ones safe by paying attention to the drivers as you go, and ensuring everyone is secure in their seat. Roughhousing and playing can put everyone at risk, so it’s best to leave the horseplay until after your ride is finished!
Know Your Horse P's & Q's
We’re proud to offer some of the friendliest horses in the Rockies for our sleigh rides, but for everyone’s safety, it’s important to remember that even the gentlest of giants can be startled, especially with a little one running about. Please make sure that everyone riding knows to only approach the animals with the correct guidance and supervision, and to never walk behind the horses in order to prevent any mishaps.
Prepare to Have Fun
Sleigh rides are a wonderful way to celebrate the season and a truly unique way to see the Rockies. Dash across the snow this holiday season and listen closely, you might just hear the sound of bells in the air!
