Things to do in April in Banff & Lake Louise

April marks the start of the spring shoulder season, making it one of the most budget-friendly times to explore Banff and Lake Louise.
While the snow becomes less predictable, the mountains still offer excellent skiing and snowboarding. Meanwhile, lower elevations in town start to thaw, signaling the arrival of spring. But don’t worry, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy! Here’s what awaits you in Banff and Lake Louise this April.
What to See and Do
April is a rare time when you can enjoy both summer and winter activities in one destination, offering a unique adventure experience.
Early Season Hiking
Some hiking trails start to thaw early in the season, making April a great time to hit the trails. Be sure to pack appropriately for the conditions, as trails might be snowy, icy, wet, or clear. Essentials include sturdy hiking boots, poles, and ice cleats.Wildlife is also more active this time of year as animals emerge from hibernation. They often travel along well-worn paths, which might include the trail you're hiking on. Familiarize yourself with bear safety tips, stick with a group, and always carry bear spray. Being prepared will make your hike safer, more enjoyable, and more confident.
Where to Hike
Looking for trail recommendations? Here are a few ideas:
- Tunnel Mountain & Sulphur Mountain (Banff)
Accessible through Roam Transit or by car, these popular trails are easy to reach and well-traveled.
- Johnston Canyon
April is ideal for exploring Johnston Canyon since it’s less crowded compared to peak months. Drive along the Bow Valley Parkway during daylight hours to the clearly marked parking lot, or take the Roam Transit (Route 9) between May and October. Don't forget to rent cleats from Banff Adventures in case the trail is a bit slippery.
- Lake Louise
Take a leisurely walk around Lake Louise to discover the boardwalk and small rapids located toward the far end of the trail. Since this area sits at a higher elevation, it thaws a little later, with more accessible trails opening up in May and June. Check out a guided tour option here.
Spring Skiing
April and May are your last chances to downhill ski or snowboard in Banff and Lake Louise. Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise Ski Resort generally still have a good snow base, and you couldn’t ask for better weather!
