What to Expect for Your First Time Skiing in Banff

Banff, AB, is one of the most incredibly scenic places to learn to ski. If you’re on the lookout for the perfect opportunity to try out skiing, why not spend a thrilling weekend becoming well-versed in the art of skiing while in beautiful Banff? While you probably won’t be heli-skiing for your first ski lesson in Banff, your first skiing lesson can definitely be intimidating.
Here at Banff Adventures, we have seen many first-timers getting ready to hit the slopes and know all about just how intimidating it can be. In this blog, we will walk through what you can expect from Banff skiing. Keep reading to learn!
Falling is Normal
The first thing you should understand is that falling is normal. Not a single skier on the hill has started their skiing career without at least one tumble. Do not feel embarrassed if someone comes up to help or ask if you are okay! Depending on the conditions of the hills, even more experienced skiers will wipe out. What is referred to as “black ice” (patches of ice that appear as snow) can creep up on anyone and cause the skier to take a tumble. You are not alone in learning to ski, and you will get better the more you practice.
It’s Often Challenging
Having large skis strapped to your feet for the first time can feel odd and can cause balance issues while you adjust. There will be periods of “walking” from ski lift to slope or slope to ski lift, and perhaps you might feel like you are trying to walk in clown shoes. And the new sensation of travelling down a mountain on skis is akin to driving a car for the first time. This equipment is now essentially a part of you, and you must learn to control it. Having trees, rocks, forks in the path, and other skiers to distract you does not make it easier. With time and patience, you will get there!
The Slopes are Cold
Layer up! Despite the fact that you will be moving, you will get cold. The wind and snow can really bite, so taking breaks to warm up in the chalet with a hot chocolate is a great idea! If you have hand or toe warmers, use them! We recommend that if you are going skiing in Banff, wear layers that you can easily strip down and still be comfortable in. Sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, and sweatpants and leggings are great to layer on top of one another depending on the predicted weather.
Skiing is Fun!
The most important thing of all, skiing in Banff is a thrilling experience that everyone should get to do! Yes, you may fall and get cold, but it will all be forgotten at the end of the day. Want to end the day on the highest high note? Get a pass to the world-famous Hot Springs! Trust us when we tell you that Banff skiing is not something you want to miss.
