What is Via Ferrata?
Unlike traditional mountain climbing, the Banff Via Ferrata offers the same alpine thrill but in a much more beginner-friendly way! You’ll be securely strapped to the mountain’s cable system with a harness as you embark on your adventure. As you navigate the rugged mountain path, you’ll also move your carabiner along. You’ll be completely guided throughout the tour by a knowledgeable guide.
Families with children should know that the Banff Via Ferrata tour requires a minimum age of 12 or 14 (depending on the tour). All participants must also weigh a minimum of 88 lbs.

Explorer Route (Ages 12+)
- If you’re looking to get a taste of your first via ferrata adventure, the Explorer Route is an excellent beginner-friendly option with postcard-perfect views!
- Duration: 2.5 hours
- Departs: 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm
Ridgewalker Route (Ages 12+)
- Traverse mountainous cliffs on the half-day Ridgewalker Route and experience all Mt. Noraquay has to offer—including various stunning rock formations.
- Duration: 4 hours
- Departs: 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 1:30 pm, 2:00 pm
Alpinist Route (Ages 14+)
- If you’re looking for a more intensive option but want to enjoy all the highlights of the other tours, the Alpinist Route is for you! Take to several scenic points, including the iconic Panoramadome—all within 4.5 hours!
- Duration: 4.5 hours
- Departs: 8:30 am, 1:00 pm
Skyline Route (Ages 14+)
- The Skyline Route offers a truly exhilarating experience, perfect for thrill seekers! Navigate through a rocky cliff wall and cross a 55-meter suspension bridge on your way up!
- Duration: 5 hours
- Departs: 9:00 am, 10:30 am
Summiteer Route (Ages 14+)
- The Summiteer Route is the longest tour and is perfect for those wanting to experience the ultimate Banff adventure. Afterward, enjoy a delicious, hearty lunch at the Cliffhous Bistro as you look through all your gorgeous photos.
- Duration: 6 hours
- Departs: 8:30 am, 9:30 am

What to Wear During the Tour
Dressing for success isn’t just for job interviews— It also applies to climbing mountains! Before embarking on your alpine adventure, ensuring you’re dressed right is essential. We recommend layering up with a soft-shelled jacket and pants to protect against wind and an undershirt to wick off sweat. You’ll also need proper closed-toed hiking footwear. Flip-flops and mountaineering don’t mix!
If you don’t own any hiking gear, no worries! Mt. Norquay offers free rentals of lightweight jackets and pants, hiking boots, and backpacks.
