Experience the beauty of Fortress Mountain by dogsled. Once one of Alberta’s premier ski areas, Fortress Mountain now offers a popular dogsled operation and is a favorite location for many movie sets. There’s nothing like the excitement of being pulled across a snowy landscape by a team of sled dogs in the Canadian Rockies!

This tour takes you along a trail skirting the old Fortress Mountain Ski Area with views up and down the valley and up to spectacular peaks. The trail, which was built this year for dogsledding, offers a chance to explore terrain and views that have remained largely unseen since 2004, except in films.

This tour begins with a shuttle ride from the base of the access road up to the trailhead, located about three-quarters of the way to the old ski area (roughly 15 minutes). Once there, we’ll start with an introduction to dog sledding, dog handling, and the equipment. You’ll have the chance to meet the dogs and help the guides with harnessing and preparing the sled teams.

As you travel along the trail, you’ll experience stunning views that pass that wind along the plateau of West Woody for approximately 10 km. After returning to the trailhead, you’ll have some time to thank the dogs, give them treats, and warm up in our tent by the fire while enjoying hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies before the shuttle takes you back to the parking area.

Alberta's dramatic landscapes have become some of Hollywood’s favourite filming locations. Here are some of the most famous: Inception, The Revenant, Cold Pursuit, The Bourne Legacy, Jumanji: The Next Level and many more. Perched high in the Canadian Rockies, Fortress Mountain Resort is located just over one hour east of Banff, in Kananaskis Country.
