A bicycle ride around the golf course loop begins with an inspired start below the cascading waters of Bow Falls. From here, the route crosses just about every type of mountain scenery in only 5 km. Wave to golfers on the greens before rolling smoothly into the sun-dappled forest. The slopes of Mount Rundle and Tunnel Mountain watch over riders as the road turns and the Bow River suddenly appears. The chirping of grey jays in the woods is replaced by the chatter of dippers swooping along the bubbling edges of the Bow in a display of Mother Nature’s finest.
From dawn to dusk, the gentle ups and downs of the Vermilion Lakes Road are a two-wheeler’s paradise. Each of the three lakes – and the winding road that links them – offers a unique vista to the mountain peaks above. Biking the road makes quick work of the 4.3 km to the third and least-visited of the lakes. Don’t forget to pack a snack to enjoy lakeside and take in the view.
A paved path, close to town, that could quite literally define “riverside trail” – Sundance Trail has it all, yet it’s still possible to spend a peaceful morning or afternoon on this trail. The trailhead is found just beyond the Cave & Basin and begins with a downhill cruise that’s perfect for settling into your saddle. It gets even better on the shores of the Bow River where the path is wide and smooth, making it easy to look around. Which is good, because there’s plenty to look at!
Starting and ending right from downtown Banff is one of the best road cycling loops around. The Tunnel Mountain Road ride departs from the paved path paralleling Banff Avenue and climbs steadily uphill on a beloved local leg-burner.
The rewards of this uphill grind come pretty quickly, starting at the eye-catching geological formation known as the Hoodoos. From here the road is a cyclist’s dream, curving gently up, down and around Tunnel Mountain. For some, the best part is the views along the way, and for others it’s the feeling of cruising downhill into town and a well-deserved patio beverage.
Experience the breathtaking scenery of the Canadian Rockies on this cycle from Banff to Canmore. Beloved by locals and visitors alike, this 22km journey meanders through lush forests, and along sparkling rivers, offering towering mountain views at every turn.
Ideal for cyclists of all abilities this paved trail is easy to navigate and if you're worried about your stamina, you can rent an e-bike to help you out. Bike one way and catch Roam Transit back to Banff or bike it in both directions (44 kms round trip).
